Understanding Self-Esteem
Self-esteem relates to the sense of self-worth and respect a person has for themselves. As we grow, how we view our physical selves, how we accomplish our goals, how others view us etc. influences our own sense of self-worth. Circumstances and environment can also negatively affect self-esteem, which can result in self-doubt, negative views or shame about oneself.
Generally, those with lower self-esteem suffer from poor quality of life and may even trigger other mental health disorders.
What are the signs of low self-esteem?
- Holding yourself to a standard you can’t reach (set the bar too high for yourself), and subsequently get disappointed when you don’t
- Extreme criticism of self, only looks at negatives about yourself, dismisses or never acknowledges the positives
- Not giving yourself the credit when you accomplish/achieve something
- Constantly comparing yourself to others, often negatively
- Self-doubt, self-deprecating talk
- Refuses to accept compliments
- Constantly irritated or annoyed at self, which can also bleed into relationships
- Social withdrawal
- Feelings of worthlessness
- Mental health disorders (depression, anxiety, anger problems, stress disorders etc)
- Substance/alcohol abuse
Everyone has the right to feel comfortable being themselves. One of the most effective ways to develop your self-esteem is taking therapy.
